I'm doing this the stupid easy-peasy way that I did with my sherlock recs, only a little less easy-peasy, in that I'll give short descriptions.

FYI: I'm not a historical stickler, but I don't generally rec stories that are obviously anachronistic unless it's AU or for comedy.

(nearly) EVERYTHING is Arthur/Merlin/Arthur, because I'm not far enough to know any other ships that are as much fun. I'm also terrible about noting ratings, so even if I don't say it's not worksafe, it still may very well be gratuitous PWP.

* = the best of the best that I've read. - school AU, internalized homophobia warning - rageprufrock on AO3. has a modern British royalty AU that is particularly hilarious given the recent Wedding.* - astolat's account on AO3. she is one of the mods of Yuletide and HOMG GLORIOUS MERLIN FIC. I don't even. * - the summary for this is "Arthur finds out Merlin's secret - and he does not react well." (AO3) - modern AU, pretend boyfriends at a bar, PG-13 - modern AU, mathematicians, PG-13 - modern AU, Arthur is a BNF in STARZ's "Camelot" fandom and Merlin becomes his beta (R). Full of fandom jokes and terminology, and requires no knowledge of "Camelot".* - cracklike and full of anachronisms. in a hilarious way. merlin courts arthur. (PG-13) - arthur, revenge - modern corporate magicky AU, recced by [ profile] hinotori, epic, complete, awesome, probably no more than PG-13 - the weather sucks, arthur is grumpy, and merlin bangs a stableboy. NC-17 - university AU, arthur is a bro, author rates the series NC-17 but I think it's R, recced by [ profile] hinotori[]=232768 - seperis on AO3, various usually-explicit ratings - indefinite WIP; Merlin is raised by Druids and then given to Arthur, rather NSFW, angst. - [ profile] aleathiel's fic master list; has some so-so stuff and some heartbreaking stuff, of various ratings. - multiple arthurs/merlin, PWP, very NC-17 - arthur attempts to woo merlin, subtly. rated "m", adorkable. - a remix of the above story, in which merlin is clueless and wooed. - arthur/merlin/arthur, arthur/gwen-ish, gwen/lancelot, M - after a decade of his reign, King Arthur holds a competition for the position of Court Sorcerer - in which merlin and arthur are shipwrecked, and merlin's powers come in handy-trouble. um. amusing? probably dubcon? I don't even know. - a remix of the above story. several instances of similar incidents.[]=232768 - Lisztful on AO3. Very good. - arthur is accidentally turned into a bird. pre-slash more than anything. G. note - I actually dislike this fic, not because it's bad, but because it is uncomfortable; and I think that the reasons that I am discomfited by it are the same ones that make it good; and that is why I rec it, because it does those things well. - knowing about knowing. post-season 3, I think. PG or PG-13 - remix of the previous fic, from Merlin's perspective. - technically reinc but not much; NC-17, sunrise outside, technically porn but very very pretty prose. - arthur has an injury, vexes merlin by being a bad patient, and takes poppy juice for seven nights. - a remix of the above fic, from arthur's POV, lovely lovely. - in which arthur masturbates everywhere - modern AU, arthur goes to amsterdam - remix of the above story, 1700s arthur goes to amsterdam - modern AU, arthur inherited a chain of nightclubs and meets a fellow there one night; starts out kind of iffy but gets good. - remix/retelling of the above story. NO, I KNOW, I LIKE IT. - in which arthur is embattled by merlin trying to get him to eat fruit - in which merlin is embattled on all sides by Gaius's health kick (remix of above story), very funny - aching, unknowing - remix of the above story. didn't hit me quite right for the sock in the gut that I look for in sadfic, but will probably hit someone else very very hard in the same place. - some very lovely drabbles, and even including a morgana/gwen and a morgana/morgause one, each! - at a visit to another court, merlin fights with another prince's manservant; arthur lets him take care of himself.[]=232768 - thehoyden on AO3 - merlin doesn't listen to gossip. I smiled like an idiot reading this. - arthur finds out merlin's secret, and dreams of him dying. - total and complete porn. bottom!merlin. - actually, all her stuff is worth reccing (also mostly porn). - [ profile] derryere's fic list, yes read it all - a big bang story; the rain won't stop. - if you read only one athlete!arthur fic ever, make it this one. period. WIP. in which arthur is a footballer, deeply closeted, and merlin is NOT NAMED MERLIN and a physiotherapist.* - in which arthur goes on many (unsuccessful) blind dates and merlin is a waiter, adorbz - [ profile] lamardeuse's "Merlin" fic, so adorable I cried a little. note that she also writes Bradley/Colin (that would be RPF), so if that's not your cup of tea (as it is not mine), do pay attention. - kind of shameless porn, merlin goes to a brothel; one of the few times I've seen Sodomy-Is-Bad-in-This-Society as a theme in Merlin fic - [ profile] crazyboutremmy's master fic post. - in which Merlin goes to visit his mother, and Arthur doesn't miss him. At all. (featuring completely-thick!Arthur) (this author has a lot of good fics)

[ profile] fishwrites - [ profile] magog_83's master fic post. [ profile] minor_hue's fics. - in which the seasons are changing, the gears of life jog a little, and the prose is beautiful. - Merlin is a pharmacy student, and Arthur is an 1800s sea captain. - merlin has to take arthur's notes in uni. I'm sort of ambivalent about this one.[]=4151&selected_tags[tags][]=232768&selected_tags[tags][]=20940&boolean_type=and&pseud_id=Trojie&user_id=Trojie&commit=Filter+Works - trojie at AO3.[]=232768&utf8=%E2%9C%93 - LolaFeist on AO3.

Look, it's Morgana/Gwen! - modern AU. Gwen is a car mechanic, and Morgana is insufferably rich, and they are dating. R.

I think this may be the first time I've included art in the recs post proper. - [ profile] itzcoatl's deviantart gallery, frighteningly good portraits - with bonus fic.

Bits I haven't read yet but intend to soon: - in time of trial - samhain fic exchange

:D :D :D

Never mind that I have classes (and two presentations) to prepare by Friday, there's stuff in here I haven't read! (Also, <3 metafic and <3 DRP ... I really should go and re-read both of those.)

I HAVE RECS. Granted, you've already found much of what I know (that was what the <3s above referred to), but let's see.

I remember obsessively following enjoying [ profile] paperclipbitch's "We're A Storm in Somebody Else's Teacup" very much when I first got into the fandom. Only just revisited it -- I skimmed it, and it still looks good, so I'm putting that here. Link goes to part one out of eight (technically more; they had to split some parts to make them fit the character limit, but yeah). Modern AU, superpowers, "In which Gwen’s passive-aggressive revenge leads to, amongst other things, Merlin making a new friend."

Then there's the Fratboy Arthur AU (which, I believe, was the first of its kind -- there's been a lot of stuff like it now, but I still love the pure craic that is this story).

Quickening Days (groundhog day-ish scenario)

You found [ profile] lady_ragnell's stuff on your own -- most of what she writes is well worth a look. I loved (loved loved) No Business Like Show Business -- that was the first of hers I read, and I keep coming back to it -- but they really are all good.

There's more, of course, but for the next 24 hours or such, these should probably do :)

Oh, and are you interested in fic for BBC's Sherlock? Because if so ... :D

Clearly you have a vested interest in making sure I never leave my computer again.

I will tell you when I am done reading all the stuff you just linked me. So that you can link me MORE. oh my god i will never get a job and be a productive member of society.

(my "recs lists" are more like "public notes to myself on what fics I liked" than anything else)

* I have a bunch of stories-mostly-BBC-Sherlock that I've memmed on AO3 here ( which I haven't yet bothered to put on my LJ recs list because I am lazy.

Uhm. Yes. That up there is "The Theory of Narrative Casuality", by a yet-unknown author. It's the Meta-Verse that consumed the largest part of last week.
Prompt: "Sherlock is a well-known fanartist whose online antics always land him on fandom_wank. John's a beloved BNF fanfiction author. They meet at a convention; geeky love ensues." The link list was compiled by [ profile] let_us_trade.

The story has spawned ... a non-RPG, of sorts. More like a number of fictional accounts, all of whom post within the 'verse. Catching up with it right now. Be warned: there's a lot of (fictional-but-canon) wank, some of which is exceedingly hard to stand and makes me want to throw things at my computer ... then again, it's just that well done. :D;;

Oh. Pun. Whoops. :D;;; Would you believe that that was entirely due to eary morning muddle-headedness? *coughs*

Also, thank you thank you THANK YOU for that rec list! :D I suspect I'll be spending much of next week glued to my computer screen. It's too warm to be outside, anyway.

I flailed. Literally. I CAN'T EVEN.

re:pun: I believe that it was an accident. A lot of my puns are accidents, too, funnily enough.

Actually, speaking of other fandoms, do you know of any Merlin-Harry Potter crossovers? I remember that there's an award in the HP universe known as the "Order of Merlin" (for working to improve Muggle-Wizard relations, apparently) and that "Merlin" is one of the wizard trading cards. And um. I looked on the AO3 and there wasn't much that contained both. And by "not much" I mean like three fics (this one ( is passable, but not what I was looking for).

I don't suppose you know of anything good?

Also, author is apparently no longer unknown, if you didn't catch that - [ profile] falling_voices
From: [identity profile]
Re: Crossovers: Unfortunately no. :< I sort of have this idea of the kids from HP working out what exactly was going on between Merlin and Arthur (and Ginny and Hermione getting inordinately excited about it while Harry and Ron are all "...o-kaaaay" in a typical teenage boy fashion) -- as part of a school project or whatever -- and then, at some point, have research talk back at them in Merlin's (and maybe Arthur's) voice(s), Marauders' Map-style.

Either way, it hasn't been written. Or at least I haven't been able to find it yet. I'll keep my eyes open and you in mind, though!

Thanks for the heads-up on the author -- [ profile] falling_voices it is! :D And they seem extremely surprised at their instant internet fame. Which I find strangely endearing. I'm sort of tempted to add them myself, but I figure it'd be sort of creepy, seen as I haven't interacted with them at all so far. *laughs*

I sort of have this idea of
Clearly you should write this. (I would read it.)
I was just struck, as a result of your idea, of young!troubled!Dumbledore finding out something similar - but of course in those days homosexuality wasn't okay in the Muggle world at all (I usually don't see the Wizarding world being open to queer sexualities). Whereas for Harry's generation, it's less of a Thing, because at least it isn't illegal anymore, regardless of individuals' opinions.
Anyway that could be a source of personal comfort for young!Dumbledore. I feel like. Maybe. Or not.

they seem extremely surprised at their instant internet fame.
It's a little meta how writing this (awesome) anonymous fic about BNFs made them a BNF.

... and then, "order of Merlin" could be code for something very different. Maybe. Seen as Dumbledore did receive one eventually.

Oh god, now I want to read this. :<

Thanks for the encouragement re: writing stuff up. Unfortunately I've never been able to finish anything that passes the 2k mark, so I don't think this is going to happen ... but thank you, anyway! :)

And true, it is meta. Quite!
From: [identity profile]
Seen as Dumbledore did receive one eventually.
The Harry Potter Lexicon says "he created the award of the Order of Merlin, which currently commemorates those who have done something such as performing a great deed at personal risk; or for contributions to the wizarding world, although originally it was an organisation to promote Muggle rights." (I've altered some of the punctuation for clarity.)

According to the same source (, there are (at least) three classes to the Order of Merlin. Other known recipients than Dumbledore (1st class) include Cornelius Fudge (1st class), Newt Scamander (2nd class), and Peter Pettigrew (1st class).

I would need to reread HP7 to do this fic, which - well, if I skim and only do the bits involving Dumbledore it could probably work out. (I deny the canonicity of books 4-7.)

I've never been able to finish anything that passes the 2k mark,
Don't think of it as being a long fic - I'd be happy with a drabble, seriously.
From: [identity profile]
Re: original topic -- This list has EXPLODED. I will have to catch up. Good god woman, don't you sleep? D:

The Harry Potter Lexicon says
Whoops. That right there is why I should check my sources. If you write this, I'll read it! I'd definitely read it. :) And as for the other thing, I might give it a shot.

(I deny the canonicity of books 4-7.)
Okay, I'll bite. If you deny the canonicity of GoF through DH, what happens after PoA?
From: [identity profile]

I might give it a shot.
Yay! Please do!

If you write this,
Hmm... I'm seriously considering it now.

what happens after PoA?
You know, nobody's actually ever asked me that question before. Quite honestly, I haven't found a fic good enough to replace books 4 through 7. (Whatever it is, it doesn't involve Sirius being dead, or at least not dead permanently.)
