Rupert finds himself in Germany after the war, asked to help with reconstruction, and is not surprised by this.
What surprises him is finding that Oberst von Luger is now cooperating with the Allies, helping and, presumably, doing his best to repair whatever small part of Germany he can.
Rupert is not sure what to think, that he must associate with a man he came to warily respect before the escape. He did not, in truth, intend to find himself posted in Germany afterwards.
But Friedrich von Luger is kind enough, easier to work with than most and hardly a strain on Rupert's formidable patience, and he does not speak of those who escaped and never came home, for which Rupert is thankful.
