[snippet] Places (Discworld, Mal)
Nov. 27th, 2005 12:30 amTitle: Places
Rating: PG
Fandom: Discworld. Monstrous Regiment.
Pairing: gen. Mal POV.
Disclaimer: All to Terry Pratchett. I make no money, only fun.
Notes: Because you know I can't resist the snarky vampire not!boy. But I'm never going to do this for any other Pterry book....I hope.
Maladicta does not like war. It is too easy to think of b- of bl- of the b-word, of damage wrought to flesh and bone, and forget for a moment that she is trying to pass for human, at least a little.
Well, only when being a vampire is less useful. For some reason, the threat of bloodsucking violence seems to make people think twice, even when the soldier's got a black ribbon pinned to his bandolier. And Mal tries, she really does, not to smile too toothily, although with canines like hers, it's a bit hard.
But war, it seems, is where she belongs, among those accustomed to violence and death. They wince when they first see her, but they do not bring out torches. They do not try to kill Corporal Maladict because they are all-too-aware of what Corporal Maladict did in the last battle - and it is better to have a vampire on your side than against it.
