Title: Real Goals
Rating: PG
Fandom: Bleach
Ships: Renji+Byakuya (implied), Renji+Rukia, Ichigo/Rukia
Summary: Renji didn't get the girl.
Disclaimer: Not mine.
Words: 188
Renji isn't sure why he’s not more upset. The human kid got the girl, the one whom Renji was always supposed to get, if the stories work right. Kurosaki Ichigo got Renji’s girl, and Renji’s not pissed off about it.
Disappointed, kinda, yeah, ‘cause Rukia’s a good girl and calling Renji ‘scum’ doesn’t leave any worse words for Kurosaki when the kid deserves ‘em (at least, none Renji’s allowed to say in mixed company). But Renji’s not so upset about not getting the girl.
More interested in being able to surpass his taichou, get a chance to land a hit on Kuchiki and make him look at him, acknowledge that yeah, Renji’s good enough, even if he is gutter-scum from Rukongai.
And he kind of never noticed that he wasn’t getting the girl, that this wasn’t the way to get the girl. And by the time someone else got her, he didn’t really care.
You spend long enough working for something you start to realize just how important it is to you, really.
Not getting the girl isn’t so important when it isn’t the girl you want, anyway.
