Jun. 27th, 2006 05:37 amTitle: Better Friends
Rating: PG
Fandom: Bleach
Characters: Kyouraku Shunsui, Urahara Kisuke (x12), Komamura Sajin, Tousen Kaname, very lightly implied Kyouraku/[dear old friend of his]
Disclaimer: Handsome men = KT's.
Notes: I promised myself I'd write nothing under 500 words for the rest of the summer.Watch; I won't listen. I did it! 505 words.
Edits: YES DEAR GOD PLEASE. Wait, do I sound desperate?
Summary: Shunsui thinks that all the people hating on Aizen and Company are being dumb. Just not in so many words.
It's easy for the ranks of betrayed shinigami to say that what was done was evil; that those who left Seireitei and the Gotei 13 damaged in their wake are traitors and should be killed. It's easy to say that they should all have known that Aizen was too kind to be trusted, his machinations obvious; that Ichimaru clearly possessed ill intentions from the start and should never have been allowed the captaincy; that Tousen was clearly mentally and morally unfit for his position. They should have known from Aizen's manner, or Gin's quiet cruelty, or Tousen's emphasis on vigilantism, that they would go bad, and everyone should have stopped them. Kira and Hisagi seem to be most affected by it, even though they were exploited the same as all the rest (though it's a blessing that Hinamori has escaped all this, since the recrimination of the other shinigami in conjunction with her self-recrimination would probably do her yet more harm).
Really, Shunsui thinks, all the ones left complaining are lying to themselves. The point of illusion is that you can't tell what the truth is. The point of a smile is not only to show joy but also to hide real emotions. The point of lending sense-darkness to others is to keep them from seeing what's around them. Being taken in is a shame, yes, but excusable under the circumstances. There's no use getting angry and riled up to fight, especially since he knows that there's a war in the offing that will come soon enough.
Of course, he doesn't empathize with the three who left. It's not like he would kill Nanao - not that she idolizes him, anyway; she thinks he's a drunkard and a rake, only half of which is true, given whose bed he's been borrow-sharing since long before he became a captain - although some afternoons, when she wakes him up from his nap by stealing his hat and throwing cold water over his head (with the bucket quick to follow), he thinks he might someday. But only for a moment.
And of course he wouldn't leave his oldest and dearest friend behind (although it seems like Aizen didn't either). He thinks Komamura's confusion is understandable and his sense of righteous loathing is maybe a bit extreme, but he understands. Being betrayed by a trusted, beloved friend can do that, has done it to less devoted men than Komamura was to Tousen.
It's hard to let a friend go to another world, harder to swear never to speak to him again, to promise to kill him if he ever tries to come back. Easier in some ways, maybe, to never have to worry that he's okay because it will never matter, but worrying all the same. He may never be able to see you again, but he's still your friend. You still think of him.
Shunsui thinks that maybe Komamura is a better friend, because at least Komamura wouldn't hope that Kisuke will be able to come back someday.
