[Constantine snippet]: Situation
Jun. 5th, 2005 01:26 pmTitle: Situation
Author:
valmora
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Constantine, the movie.
Pairing: past John/OMC, implied unrequited Chas/John
Disclaimer: Not mine. All to DC/Vertigo and the peons to whom Hellblazer was licensed.
Notes: This was intended to be rebellion against all the Chastine authors who make Chas seem like he's twelve-year-old OMFG-JAILBAIT when, really, he's not. Besides, when he's all OMFG-JAILBAIT, Chastine isn't cool; it's gross. Unfortunately, I only succeeded in making a bitter Chas.
Chas doesn't know why John won't let him go. It's not like Chas hasn't deported a demon before. Shit, he was working San Francisco until Thom kicked the bucket and Chas had to find another mentor.
Thom used to take him along and show him how it was done. And it's okay that John didn't believe him when he said he had some hands-on experience, but John knows he was with Thom first, and John knew Thom. He used to drop by Thom's apartment occasionally, when things got too bad in Los Angeles for one exorcist to handle on his own, and ask for help. Thom would always drop everything and go, leaving Chas behind to pick up the slack.
Doesn't John know about that? Or did he just assume that all the exorcisms got left for later ‘cause Chas was useless?
Maybe John was too busy screwing Thom into the mattress in between exorcisms to ask. He wouldn't know from experience, but he figures that a guy shoving his dick into something has more pressing concerns than the demon population. And Chas always got thrown out of the apartment right after Thom, with John in tow, got back. When Chas was let in, Thom would have a glazed look in his eyes and everything would smell of sex.
So Chas can't forgive John for not trusting him, because John trusted Thom.
And John seemed so surprised when he found out that Chas knew how to shoot a gun, knew how to aim and load and clean it. Well, duh, asshole. Thom didn't let him come unarmed, and carrying a gun you don't know how to use is more dangerous than not carrying one at all. But John just kind of blanked that out and pretended like Chas'd never held a gun in his life.
And then all the books? Chas reads 'em because John won't let him do anything else and makes fun of even that. It's like he doesn't want an apprentice at all, just a driver. And maybe that's the truth.
Except Chas wants a mentor, not just a passenger. So he's going to scrap the books someday, and pull out the gun Thom left to him, and force John to realize that he knows something. That he's not just some stupid kid. Maybe after that John'll take him along, and maybe let him take Thom's place.
