challenge request?
Jun. 25th, 2005 01:27 pmThis is a challenge gacked from
tea_and_snark.
Basically, what you do is give me one or two characters (specify if you want romantic relationship or no if you give me two) from any of the "fandoms" listed below. Then three words to include. Then an object.
And I'll write you a fic with those three things.
The worlds you can request CHARS from:
Kiy/AFTD (And From the Darkness)
VDD/VDD Offshoots
Iron Mage
Shadowstorm
And the Music
And if you're
figletofvenice, then you can ask for The Great Escape.
(and if you really, truly want a fic and have your heart set on a fandom you know I know, then you can request it. Except Good Omens or other Neil Gaiman works (excluding Sandman), for which I do not write fanfiction, not even with thirty-nine-and-a-half pseudonyms)

Date: 2005-06-30 04:14 am (UTC)Now I just might have to do that.
I get sucked into way too many fandoms.

Date: 2005-07-01 04:20 am (UTC)Kind of how I feel about The Great Escape. I'm just glad I'm not the only one who writes it!

Date: 2005-07-02 02:30 am (UTC)So yay for you and me! Boldly going where not many people have gone before! ::tackle::

Date: 2005-07-02 02:36 am (UTC)*sighs* Which is a pity, because I know every slasher across the land would scream "OMGliekwhoaDannyandWillie" when s/he saw it. Even if s/he doesn't write fic for it.
I think the biggest problem is that the movie is old, so people don't watch it because they think it'll be boring (it's old, right?), and then they miss out. Or they figure that there's no fic for it because the movie's so old that people will ignore all the could-be-interpreted-as-homoerotic tension because of the social mores of the time. And then they don't read and they don't write.
Yay for us! (We should cowrite a fic, you know - what say you to that?)
::tickles::

Date: 2005-07-02 02:46 am (UTC)I think the biggest problem is that the movie is old, so people don't watch it because they think it'll be boring (it's old, right?), and then they miss out. That really is true. People should give more thought to the slashiness of old movies (well, and the merits of old movies in general). After all, how else does a fandom start? It doesn't always begin at the gigantic monster that is the Harry Potter fandom. You have to start small, one fic at a time. And, of course, sread teh word, and uhm, make all your slasher friends watch the movie. (One of the better things about owning the DVD. I can now spread the love. ::laughs::)
Oooh, cowriting! I haven't done it before, but I'd be willing to try it out! ::poke::

Date: 2005-07-02 02:52 am (UTC)This just made me laugh. I don't know why. XD
And they are obviously getting it on.
Have you noticed that they have NO SENSE OF PERSONAL SPACE around each other? It's lovely! It's like, "How much more slashy can you get without snogging on screen?"
and uhm, make all your slasher friends watch the movie
*waves hand in air* Me, too. I'm reccing it to all and sundry. Unfortunately, I have no slashwriter friends. I just have slash-reader friends. >.<
but I'd be willing to try it out
What ship do you want? There's the obvious (Danny and Willie), the fun (um... I don't know what your 'fun' ships from tGE are...), and the just plain weird (Hendley/Werner. ew). Or some combination...
no subject
Date: 2005-07-02 03:05 am (UTC)I do have slashwriter friends, they just live every which way. Hopefully when I visit them, I can share the wealth.
What ship do you want? I honestly don't care. As long as it's not Hendley/Werner, or something equally weird. Y'know what I find myself liking? Hilts/Goff. Goff is basically a puppy, following Hilts around and just generally being happy. And throwing Hilts his baseball glove. Then, of course, there's Danny/Willie and Sedgwick/Ashley-Pitt. (I think I can see Segewick with almost anyone. He just seems social enough that you could make it work. Especially with Danny or Willie, even though they are having mad sex with each other.) They live in POW camp together. Almost anything can work. ::laughs::
no subject
Date: 2005-07-02 03:29 am (UTC)"Okay, so long as I can ravish you against that wall."
I can share the wealth.
We'll just make a lending library of slash resources. We rent it out; if you don't return it, we sic the homophobes on you.
As long as it's not Hendley/Werner
I should do a Hendley/Werner drabble for April Fool's, just to weird you out. The problem is that I'd probably weird me out, too, which would be very scary.
And throwing Hilts his baseball glove.
And they make vodka together, too. Don't forget that. And they knew each other in the previous camp, and...
And that's way more plausible than Hilts/Ives.
I vote Hilts/Goff gets at least a passing mention.
you could make it work. Especially with Danny or Willie, even though they are having mad sex with each other.
Well, there's always the scenario of "Willie loves Danny but is too much of a coward to say it and is having wild monkey sex with Sedgwick to get Danny out of his head while Sedgwick is trying to get Eric out of his head..."
Um, yes. Can you say "love polygon"?
Can I vote passing reference to Roger/Mac? Because I just LIKE that pairing. I don't know why.
no subject
Date: 2005-07-04 11:50 pm (UTC)I forgot that! Makes it so much better/ more plausible. I say it gets a mention. Because, yeah. I may need to write it.
Um, yes. Can you say "love polygon"?
WAH! Love polygon! YES! ::laughs:: You could totally make it bigger by having Eric have sex with Roger to get Sedgwick out of his head, and Roger is trying to forget Mac. AHAHA. Love... octagon? Wait, that's eight. I don't know what six is. What a mess that would be.
Can I vote passing reference to Roger/Mac?
Why not? I mean, they're all banging each other anyway.

Date: 2005-07-05 05:06 am (UTC)Ooh, please, please? ::puppy eyes::
by having Eric have sex with Roger to get Sedgwick out of his head, and Roger is trying to forget Mac
We are so sick. But this is so much fun. XD This is how we're doing it:
Willie is with Sedgwick but wants to be with Danny, while Sedgwick wants to be with Eric. Meanwhile, Eric is with Roger but wants Sedgwick (I LOVE our Ashley-Pitt. He's so adorable), while Roger wants Mac.
See, to complete this, you'd have to have Mac and Danny, but that just kind of makes me go, "Huh?"
So I vote Mac and Griffith [the tailor] (because he's flaming in a sort of nondirectional way), but Griffith knows that Mac wants Roger and is okay with that, because Griffith seems like that kind of guy.
Which would make it a nonagon.
Six people would make it a hexagon, unless you wanted to make a very bad pun and call it a sexagon. Which is the wrong prefix, but it has other things going for it than etymological accuracy. ^_~
What a mess that would be.
Yes, but it would be a FUN mess. And all you have to do is get Eric/Sedgwick or Roger/Mac fixed up and it resolves itself.
Are we going to have plot in this fic, or is it just going to be romantic mess all over the place? Because the way this is working, I don't know how they got anything DONE. Except each other, obviously. ^_~
Also - at the rate we're going, this deserves an epic. Really, it does.
Are you still interested in cowriting something? Because if you can, could we talk about it on AIM?
they're all banging each other anyway.
Indeed.

See, to complete this, you'd have to have Mac and Danny, but that just kind of makes me go, "Huh?"
I know. It puzzles me. But, you may not have to complete it. Danny and Mac could comiserate on how they aren't having sex, and how the people they want are with other people, then they can have long intense conversations over smuggled liquor. I can see that happening.
Are we going to have plot in this fic, or is it just going to be romantic mess all over the place?
I think that it depends on how ambitious we are. And how much we want to finish it. I have no idea how this is going to work out.
Still interested in the co-write, and AIM is a good idea. This is so exciting.

Date: 2005-07-06 05:03 pm (UTC)And there was much rejoicing!
Danny and Mac could comiserate on how they aren't having sex, and how the people they want are with other people, then they can have long intense conversations over smuggled liquor.
This is a visual that made me laugh. Out loud. My mom gave me a really weird look from the other room. XD
We'd have to find a way to get them in character for that, because I don't think Danny is emotionally capable of being more than about 50 feet from Willie, except in the tunnel, but that's just like one sexual metaphor so I'm not going there.
But the liquor could be more vodka, because apparently the same guys distilled stuff several times (in real life I mean), so theoretically Goff, Hendley, and Hilts could have a real business going - and that's how Hendley scrounges some of that stuff. Oh, hee. I feel special.
And how much we want to finish it
I'm epic-fic-phobic, but if you want, we could write in installments, with little plots. 'Cause I think the only way we could do this is to make it epic - you have to start early, showing how they get into that mess, and then get through to the resolution of that mess.
The problem with that is we actually have to, you know, do research and stuff. Into A) slang - and WHAT FECKING REGION IT COMES FROM BECAUSE THEY'RE FROM ALL OVER (::groan::) - B) attitudes at the time (as in, I read a book on attitudes towards homosexuals in WWII several years ago, and that will help, if we're going to be that specific), and C)cultural things at the time (what songs were popular). Also, it seems that the Luftwaffe let the Red Cross come through occasionally, so what would they bring? News? Gifts from home? Letters?
Obviously, I'm only listing stuff I can think of off the top of my head and that I don't know or that I'm already aware that I have to remember to correct on a regular basis; you probably know some of this.
Also, do you want it in third person POV, or rotating first person? ('rotating' being my slang for the perspective changing from scene to scene due to the existence of multiple main characters)
AIM is a good idea
What times are you online? (also, what time region are you operating on? I'm US Central)
My AIM SN is "ferrumage"

Date: 2005-07-10 08:50 pm (UTC)Ahaha. This makes me laugh. So hard. And yet, it's very true. I think that if Danny was in enough emotional anguish over the state of things, he could separate himself from Willie, at least for a little while. And c'mon. Comiserating would be so much fun!
But the liquor could be more vodka
Ooh, you are smart. Yay for common sense!
I'm epic-fic-phobic, but if you want, we could write in installments, with little plots.
Oh, yes. That sounds awesome. It makes the whole thing less...intimidating. Like it's not yelling at me to finish it.
It seems like there's a lot of stuff to think about, but if we at least plan out what small plots we want to use, we can get specific places where we'd need slang or popular songs and the like. I assume that the Red Cross sends a lot of food, and probably letters. We should probably look into this as well, if we need to.
I, personally, much prefer the third person to the first person. If you want to work with specific povs, you can make it in the third person and still have the story from one person's pov in particular.
I'm on AIM in the evenings mostly (like, after 9:00, Eastern Standard Time). I haven't been getting on AIM that much, but now I have a reason to. ::laughs:: My AIM SN is ChiTasnoMiko

Date: 2005-07-10 10:11 pm (UTC)I'm glad you're amused. XD
If I were a more unprofessional author, there would so be a minor character who gets to make pervy comments like that.
Commiserating would be so much fun!
It would. We should do that scene. Only how to get them in that situation....? ::evil plotting begins::
It makes the whole thing less...intimidating.
Intimidation is bad and scary and should be avoided.
if we at least plan out what small plots we want to use
I wouldn't dream of doing anything else. I think I would die if I went into this blind.
I assume that the Red Cross sends a lot of food, and probably letters
I went and looked this up: the RC made sure that prisoners were being treated okay, brought letters from home, and supplemented camp rations. The note on their website says, "Most [care packages] were food packages of a uniform size (10"x10"x4.5") and weight (11 pounds) that contained such nonperishable items as prunes, raisins, liver pate, coffee, corned beef, sugar, dried milk, oleomargarine, biscuits, orange concentrate, cheese, canned salmon or tuna fish, chocolate bars, cigarettes, and soap. Other packages consisted of medical supplies, clothing, toilet articles, and seeds and gardening materials. Prisoners regularly received packages in the European camps..."
can make it in the third person and still have the story from one person's pov
I am totally with you on this. And of course it's third person perspectivized (my term), because otherwise there'd be none of the emotional anxiety that we need to carry this off. XD
One note about this, though - one of my affectations when writing is to change the spellings of certain words ("humo[u]r") depending on the nationality of the character. Yeah, I'm a creep. :D I thought I should mention it before I started going through fic and adding 'u's for no apparent reason.
after 9:00, Eastern Standard Time
That's good. I'm Central time, so that works for me. My only thing is that I don't usually have to get up in the morning, so if you need to go, please do so.

Date: 2005-07-12 06:57 pm (UTC)As far as spelling changes depending on accent? It's okay by me. Sounds like a good idea.

Date: 2005-07-12 08:15 pm (UTC)I'm one of those scary freaky people who have been writing stories and actually gone to the library to research random details (for example, I was writing a vampire novel at one point, and actually went to a reference librarian and had her help me look up the average height of Japanese adults in the late 1600's. No joke).
Actually, do you want to write out accents, or no? Like, for example, if you look at Robert Burns' poetry, he writes so that it's read in something approximating a Scottish accent (he knows it's 'about', he just writes 'aboot' because that's how he said it). I would navigate towards no, because as you said, approximating the accent inside your own head is hard enough, and the word choice and syntax should be enough, but I'm willing to abide by whatever you want.
