Draco had always thought that if he could earn Harry's trust, he could have Dumbledore's, and then maybe he would be safe - safe from Voldemort and the Death Eaters.

He earned Harry's trust more easily than he should have, and if he gained, more slowly, Harry's love, then that was unintentional and wonderful.

But Dumbledore gave him no protection, and Harry was the only one who trusted his loyalty, and Draco thought reflectively, staring at the wrong side of Bellatrix’s wand, that perhaps he should have chosen different words on the train – then, he might have had a chance.
