Rupert thinks that of all twenty of them in the organisation, there isn't a complete man among them. Roger, with his soul torn to pieces and the only thing left of him the drive to escape; Eric, with his new-minted fear of drowning, a handicap indeed for a Navy man; Mac with his obsessive gathering of information because of a fear that the goons will outsmart them; Blythe with his eyes and Cavendish with his two daughters wounded in the service of the Red Cross, and of course Rupert himself, in pain whenever he walks and unable to do much more than that with his wounded leg.

Not a one whole, not a one among them who would be able to make it out alive without the support of the others.

Not a one, he thinks privately, who will make it out of Germany unless it is to make a permanent visit to Heaven. He does not say it. He is an officer, as are they all, and they all promised the Queen when they enlisted that they'd give their lives for England if asked.

England is asking, in Roger's voice and with Roger's hatred of the Germans, to risk just that, and it is well beyond their wish or wanting to say no.
