valmora: "Monty Python and the Holy Grail": King Arthur abusing a peasant, captioned "Help, help, I'm being repressed!" (repression)

Okay. This is mostly inspired by Mary Black's "My Younger Son Came Home Today," which is a very pretty song and reminded me of Oliver. No, he's not canon.

Oliver is a character specially created by [livejournal.com profile] figletofvenice and myself for use in an epic "Great Escape" fic we will at some point write.

Title: Knows Anyway
Rating: PG
Fandom: The Great Escape.
POV: Oliver Bartlett.
Disclaimer: The characters of "The Great Escape" belong to MGM/UA and Paul Brickhill, not to me. Oliver was a character invented by fans, however, as he was not referred to, only implied, in the movie itself.
Notes: Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] figletofvenice. I didn't remember what age we decided Oliver was going to be, so I just decided he was twelvish and went from there.

Oliver is going to hate telegrams until the day he dies. Oh, his grandmother thinks it's all right, thinks he doesn't know, but he does.

He's not so young and stupid that he doesn't know what a telegram means. She tried to hide it from him, too, saying that it wasn't important, that she'd tell him later.

It's been two days and Oliver is sick of her lying. He wants her to tell him the truth now, wants to hear the words from her mouth: your father is dead.

It's not like it's her son who's died, her son who's in the Navy. If it had been her son, she'd have told Oliver. Would have broken down crying in the kitchen, her old, wrinkled hands over her face.

Oliver isn't going to cry because he doesn't want to show weakness, but sometimes it's hard. He misses his dad and hates the fact that Roger Bartlett is never going to come home.
