[Bleach] Two Views (8x13)
Jul. 30th, 2006 01:24 pmTitle: Two Views
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Bleach
Pairing: Kyouraku Shunsui and Ukitake Jyuushirou. Because I can't keep my mind out of their bed.
Disclaimer: None of the characters or situations in "Bleach" belong to me; they are owned wholly by Kubo Tite and whomever he's licensed Bleach to. I just make up scenes for personal enjoyment and technically pay for the privilege.
Notes: Inspired by this image at this site. This snippet based in the fan-canon created by myself and
kira_douji, but the short background to it if you don't wish to read thirty-nine pages of as-yet-incomplete fic is that Sixth and Fifth are fighting Aizen's forces to the south of Seireitei in pitched battle. Furthermore, when Shunsui describes how he's tasting various drinks/alcohols, that's his description of how he perceives reiatsu.
Word count: 535
Summary: There are two views, two reminders, from the windows in the room.
It is raining, and they are both pretending that they are not worried. Jyuushirou lingers over a book, but his eyes flick over to the window too often to believe he has reached the end of a page, to believe that any of the words printed there have penetrated. He is looking at the rising cloud to the south, visible sign of the battle that has been raging for three days and will probably last more.
Shunsui has his back to the window but can still taste plum wine and spoilt milk and juniper-liquor; he doesn't need to look because he knows how the battle is going without it, though Jyuushirou probably does too. He is drinking to wash away the taste but is only succeeding in the sense that he is beginning to forget what all those flavors mean.
"Ukitake," he says, because he can't bring himself to use Jyuushirou's name, despite the situation, despite his worry.
"Yes?" Jyuushirou closes the book, tone more distant but no less warm for the form of address, shoulders looking tight and expression uneasy.
"It's raining." It's a peace offering, tendered as compromise - something to distract them both. A reminder of days spent studying because Jyuushirou's lungs couldn't handle exertion in the wet (until Shunsui proved, not long after their appointments to captaincy, that the problem wasn't the rain but the type of exertion), companionship and the friendship that ties them to each other as deeply as the affection represented by a single bed for the both of them does.
Jyuushirou puts the book down on the floor, unexpectedly messy, and unfolds himself, opening the door on the other side of the room from the window, stepping outside and reaching out from under the roof, outstretched palm soon wet from the water droplets that fall there. He's probably damp all over, too, from the gusts of wind that occasionally blow rain onto him, but he doesn't seem to mind, other hand wrapped around the railing at the edge, expression bright with an appreciation of the weather.
"Shunsui," he begins, turning, and it is clear the moment he spots the battle because his eyes narrow and focus on the distant cloud of battle.
Shunsui tries not to remember that what Jyuushirou is thinking is that Thirteenth is to be dispatched to the west in the morning, to defend Soul Society in case the Arrancar massing there decide to attack, which they will. They always do, and while Shunsui isn't so dependent on Jyuushirou that he can't handle being without him for a few days, he'd rather not have to spend that time with the flavor of calvados sharp in his senses as a reminder of exactly what Jyuushirou is doing.
"Yes?" he asks, sitting up and pushing away the jug of alcohol (but draining the cup in his hand nonetheless).
Jyuushirou looks down, in Shunsui's direction, as though his eyes were drawn away from the fight by force, and says, "Would you mind if I closed the window over there?"
"Not at all," Shunsui says, standing and shutting the window himself, obscuring the cloud visible in the distance, and moves to stand beside Jyuushirou, almost in the rain.
