[Bleach] Fever (6/6b)
Title: Fever
Rating: PG
Fandom: Bleach
Pairing: Kuchiki Byakuya/Abarai Renji
Disclaimer: These characters do not belong to me but to Kubo Tite and whomever else he has licensed the series to.
Summary: A warning and a bedroom scene, both more innocent than they sound.
Notes: AU-ish (speculative?) futurefic, in which Renji has been made the captain of Fifth. And he and Byakuya, after a stiff and full-of-misunderstanding relationship, broke up and really disliked each other for several years. They're trying to reconcile and get back to where they were only without the problems.
For Gali, as a sort of gift fic.
The cold gray wetness of the rain has absolutely ruined his mood. Forget spring, forget cherry blossoms, forget good weather and refreshment. It is damp, and freezing, and his clothing isn't warm enough for the weather, and on top of it when he tries to get something to wear that's warmer he's going to get soaked.
Renji wishes he'd learned a kidou for dryness. Why does kidou always have to be for battle? It could probably be put to better use in practical situations -
And then his third seat bursts through the door, her hair streaming rivulets of water onto the floor and her breathing harsh.
"Abarai-taichou," she pants, "a message - from Fourth - a fever - running rampant - quarantined Sixth - Seventh too."
Renji's stomach drops so fast he can feel the hole it's left in his chest. "Who's sick?" He fumbles around with papers on his desk, feeling helpless. Quarantine. Means nobody in and nobody out, not the lowliest scum from Rukongai or even the King, except Fourth and even then they have to be cleared by Unohana -
"The captain, vice-captain, fourth-seat, all the ninth-seats, and from the fifteenth on down in Sixth; the vice-captain, third-seat, seventh-seat, tenth-seat, and sixteenth on down in Seventh," she says, finally catching her breath, standing up straight and closing the door.
Byakuya, he does not say over the sharpness in his throat. Byakuya had been fine yesterday when they met - or had it been the day before? Renji had lost track of time, but they had passed in the hall yesterday, traded glances. He remembered that. He would have noticed something, wouldn't he? Maybe not, with that famous gaze of steel and the face of stone.
"They likely to survive?" he asks, and then realizes that's probably unprofessional, and says instead, "Is anyone in this division showing symptoms?"
"Kotetsu-fukutaichou is coming personally to check everyone. Including you, sir, which was why I came. You're wanted. First off. In case you're sick, so they can treat you first."
"It's treatable, then?" he asks, because she hasn't answered the more important of the two questions.
She nods, silently, and starts squeezing the water out of her hair.
"Thank you," he says, and walks out into the rain, thinking it's awfully stupid of them to be examining people for fever in conditions that are likely to make them catch one.
---
He's got the beginnings of it, or so Unohana tells him after he tries for the third time to get out. He's not allowed to leave in case his symptoms get worse rather than curing themselves with a little bed rest and some medication. She threatens, not unkindly, to tie him to the headboard, a request that makes him get back in bed because the last thing he needs is to be tied down and helpless in front of all her Fourth Division minions.
Instead he asks if they're doubling up rooms, and she says, "Oh, yes, of course we are" in a tone of voice that scares him. Especially after he wakes up to find himself in a room with Kuchiki-taichou, who is sleeping fitfully in the bed on the other side of the room, his throat pale and his cheeks beyond even pink and well into red, hair impossibly mussed and composure shattered.
Renji wonders if he'd be able to kill Unohana for guessing, then decides that if he reacted he'd be telling the rest of Seireitei she'd guessed right.
He turns over on his side and watches the wind in the trees, the heavy rise and fall of Byakuya's chest under the blankets, the angle of the sun. He sleeps a lot, dreaming of Hueco Mundo and blood, and wakes sweaty and frantic to Byakuya watching him.
"Feeling better?" he asks, rubbing at his eyes.
"It would be better that I ask that question," Byakuya remarks, sitting up in bed, amused. "I am not the one who woke moments ago from fever dreams." His mouth twitches slightly, the promise of a smile, and he says, "I am well."
"Good," Renji says, "'cause I'd hate to see Unohana try to stick you with something to fix you up faster. Might do something bad."
Byakuya, politely, doesn't ask what Unohana would try to stick him with, nor even who or what would be 'doing bad.' Renji feels kind of stupid to have said it.
"How long's it been?" he asks instead, changing the subject.
"Two days since you were put in this room," Byakuya replies. "Your sleep was kidou-induced."
And probably not by Unohana; Renji can figure out that much. Kuchiki-bastard's an idiot, he thinks fondly, and lies back down, covering his eyes with one forearm. "You're gonna lord it over me that you're doing better than I am, aren't you," he says, not quite belligerent. Byakuya, wisely, doesn't respond.
"Just 'cause I was sick longer doesn't mean anything," Renji continues, "but if you're over the worst then I guess you can't catch it." So he sits up, leans over - it's really a very small room, he thinks, or the Fourth Division lackey hadn't heard the rumors yet, or maybe they just got lucky - across the handspan between their beds and touches Byakuya's shoulder.
"I would think not," Byakuya says, sounding mystified but hiding it well, hair still a mess and his skin still paler than normal. He doesn't object to Renji touching him, which is strange and different and exhilarating.
"Good," Renji says, and pulls himself halfway out of bed, body spread across the space between them and kissing Byakuya on the cheek, tasting salt, before lying back down.
Byakuya's eyes are narrowed slightly, and he says, "That was unwarranted."
"You survived," Renji says. "I think that's cause for celebration. Especially since this is the second time you've put me in the hospital, and vice versa."
