valmora: "we three" witches, meeting again (Default)

In a BL panel at Anime Boston, we were invited to share our pet peeves (mine: anatomical impossibility or ambiguity; that is, His hand is where? and Whose hand is that anyway?), and a girl got up and said, "Rival shipping. Like, for example, Light and L. I just don't get it and it annoys me so much." To which the only response was to think about why I do ship Light and L:

1) Oh dear God, those minds. The reason Light has such problems bonding with people is because he's so much more intelligent than everyone else. L is clearly a match for him in at least that way. Furthermore, Light's response to Misa at least to me reads as discontent with her naivete and lack of strategic planning, which to me says that he is a) not attracted to people on the basis of physical appearance and b) that intellect for him is the most relevant factor in attractiveness or attentiveness. I don't think it's that far of a stretch to imagine that Light could have fallen for L's mind despite wanting to best him. The two are not mutually exclusive.

2) Just because L thinks Light is, or was, Kira doesn't preclude them being friends (they don't have to be 'first friends', just friends), or for him noticing that Light is attractive (he does seem to notice at least that Misa is easy on the eyes). I understand this case is a lot weaker, but...

Anyway, I wanted to write something expressing my feelings about how yes, I'd do Matsuyama-as-L any day BUT I am also aware that L is not attractive, that Light is not going to immediately nosebleed with desire for him, and that L is intellectual enough to ignore Light's physical attractiveness.

In short: FICLET. ABOUT BOYS NOT BEING ATTRACTED TO BOYS, BUT ONLY BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO KNOW EACH OTHER YET.

rating: pg
takes place during episode 3. characters not mine, no profit made.

The stack, 141 police relatives and friends, is hardly daunting; L has narrowed down suspects from greater lists before. He will have dismissed most of them within a few moments of reading their profiles, although he can’t guarantee that Kira hasn’t been dissembling and waiting, with no slip-ups from before.

Some thirty people from the bottom of the pile is the family of Yagami Souichirou. The father’s profile is spotless; the mother’s unremarkable. The son, Yagami Light – top of the national practice exams, model son, popular with the girls but not excessively so – reads like a more brilliant version of the ideal man.

To L, that profile reads like either a psychopath or a genius. Yagami Light goes in his mental ‘Suspicious’ pile, though at this point L’s ‘Suspicious’ pile includes anyone over a possibility of five percent.

He catches sight of the boy’s picture just before moving on to the daughter. Yagami Light is attractive, fine-featured, a bit arrogant-looking. L moves on to Yagami Sayu’s profile, leaving her brother categorised as he is. L has already forgotten the boy’s face.

Hmm – I used to dislike rival shipping, but that was back when I basically only knew of Harry/Draco. :P Now? I loves me some hot rival sex. XD

I've never disliked rival-shipping as an ideology, just as a specific - that is, there are certain rivals I just don't pair. Some I do. I actually got into H/D as a young'un to HP fandom, and have read some very good fics for it (and some very very bad ones), so I never learned to hate it. =D
