I'm doing this the stupid easy-peasy way that I did with my sherlock recs, only a little less easy-peasy, in that I'll give short descriptions.

FYI: I'm not a historical stickler, but I don't generally rec stories that are obviously anachronistic unless it's AU or for comedy.

I remember ~~obsessively following~~ enjoying

paperclipbitch's "We're A Storm in Somebody Else's Teacup" very much when I first got into the fandom. Only just revisited it -- I skimmed it, and it still looks good, so I'm putting that here. Link goes to part one out of eight (technically more; they had to split some parts to make them fit the character limit, but yeah). Modern AU, superpowers, "In which Gwen’s passive-aggressive revenge leads to, amongst other things, Merlin making a new friend."

lady_ragnell's stuff on your own -- most of what she writes is well worth a look. I loved (loved loved) No Business Like Show Business -- that was the first of hers I read, and I keep coming back to it -- but they really are all good.

Actually, speaking of other fandoms, do you know of any Merlin-Harry Potter crossovers? I remember that there's an award in the HP universe known as the "Order of Merlin" (for working to improve Muggle-Wizard relations, apparently) and that "Merlin" is one of the wizard trading cards. And um. I looked on the AO3 and there wasn't much that contained both. And by "not much" I mean like three fics (this one (http://archiveofourown.org/works/60307) is passable, but not what I was looking for).

I don't suppose you know of anything good?

Re: Crossovers: Unfortunately no. :< I sort of have this idea of the kids from HP working out what exactly was going on between Merlin and Arthur (and Ginny and Hermione getting inordinately excited about it while Harry and Ron are all "...o-kaaaay" in a typical teenage boy fashion) -- as part of a school project or whatever -- and then, at some point, have research talk back at them in Merlin's (and maybe Arthur's) voice(s), Marauders' Map-style.

Either way, it hasn't been written. Or at least I haven't been able to find it yet. I'll keep my eyes open and you in mind, though!

I was just struck, as a result of your idea, of young!troubled!Dumbledore finding out something similar - but of course in those days homosexuality wasn't okay in the Muggle world at all (I usually don't see the Wizarding world being open to queer sexualities). Whereas for Harry's generation, it's less of a Thing, because at least it isn't illegal anymore, regardless of individuals' opinions.
Anyway that could be a source of personal comfort for young!Dumbledore. I feel like. Maybe. ~~Or not.~~

The Harry Potter Lexicon says "he created the award of the Order of Merlin, which currently commemorates those who have done something such as performing a great deed at personal risk; or for contributions to the wizarding world, although originally it was an organisation to promote Muggle rights." (I've altered some of the punctuation for clarity.)

According to the same source (http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Order_of_Merlin), there are (at least) three classes to the Order of Merlin. Other known recipients than Dumbledore (1st class) include Cornelius Fudge (1st class), Newt Scamander (2nd class), and Peter Pettigrew (1st class).

I would need to reread HP7 to do this fic, which - well, if I skim and only do the bits involving Dumbledore it could probably work out. (I deny the canonicity of books 4-7.)
